Making your own baby food is good for your baby and your wallet. Creating your own homemade meals allows you to regulate what ingredients your child is consuming, and it turns out it can be a lot cheaper too. Prepackaged baby food often has additives and preservatives that may be harmful for your little ones growth and development. Also, making batches of baby food and freezing it can be significantly cheaper than the alternative. However, for the already busy mom, preparing your own food can take away valuable cuddle time, especially in the first year when your baby craves your attention.
What if I told you that you can feed your baby homemade, organic baby food with plenty of variety and you only need to cook once every few weeks!
Have you become part of a mommy group in your neighborhood? Why not do a homemade baby food exchange? Everyone makes one large dish and divides it up among the group. Making your own baby food doesn't have to be complicated. Focusing on one dish is much easier then focusing on several. Babies don't need fancy meals; simple, easy recipes are the best way to go. Remember to try a variety of food with your little one as the different textures and consistencies allow them to become less fussy eaters later in life.
A few things to keep in mind:
1 - It's helpful to start a Facebook page for your food exchange where you can easily communicate with your mommy group and organize the exchange.
2 - Baby cubes are perfect for freezing baby food. They are reusable and come in a variety of portions. Have a look at http://www.babycubes.com/ to find what you're looking for.
3 - Keep in mind some of the babies in your group might be off purees so making your baby food chunky is usually the best option. It's easy for moms who are introducing solids to puree their food for babies who are just starting out. Adding a bit of water and blending always does the trick.
4 - A great resource for coming up with meal ideas is: http://wholesomebabyfood.momtastic.com/
Remember the idea is to create less work so your baby has more time with you.
I dedicate this post to my wonderful mommy group. I have learned so much from all of you!
